Ecology and GIS Consultant

BirminghamCDIASSYSTEM

Les missions du poste

Company Description

Today, Assystem is among the top three independent nuclear engineering firms worldwide. With over 60 years of experience in highly regulated sectors, the group supports public and industrial stakeholders in the execution of complex and strategic infrastructure projects, subject to high safety and security requirements.

Assystem mobilizes 8,000 experts in 13 countries and intervenes across the entire project lifecycle, in engineering, project management and digital solutions.

Job Description

Are you an Ecologist with GIS experience looking for your next opportunity to develop your technical skills while working on one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects?

At Assystem UK, you’ll join a growing ecology and environmental team supporting the HS2 project, working alongside experienced ecologists, GIS specialists and wider multidisciplinary teams.

This is a great opportunity to combine your ecological knowledge with GIS, contributing to surveys, assessments, environmental mapping and mitigation across a major infrastructure programme.

You’ll support the delivery of ecological and GIS work across the HS2 project, helping project teams understand and manage environmental risks throughout construction.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting habitat and protected species surveys and ecological assessments.

  • Producing ecological and environmental mapping using GIS.

  • Managing and analysing spatial and environmental datasets.

  • Supporting EIA, HRA, BNG and ecological mitigation activities.

  • Mapping habitats, ecological constraints and protected species records.

  • Supporting Ecological Clerk of Works activities and construction monitoring.

  • Preparing technical reports and project documentation.

  • Providing practical ecological advice to project teams and contractors.

  • Working collaboratively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary environmental teams.

Qualifications

You’ll ideally bring:

  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, GIS or a related discipline.

  • Experience undertaking ecological surveys, assessments or related environmental work.

  • Experience using GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, with an interest in developing your spatial analysis and mapping skills.

  • A good understanding of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy and ecological best practice.

  • Experience producing ecological, environmental or spatial mapping and working with geographic data.

  • Exposure to development, infrastructure, construction, energy or other relevant projects.

  • Experience contributing to ecological reports, assessments or technical documentation.

  • An understanding of EIA, HRA and/or Biodiversity Net Gain.

  • Experience of protected species surveys, mitigation or ecological monitoring.

  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with colleagues, clients and wider project teams.

  • A collaborative and proactive approach, with a willingness to take ownership and learn.

  • A genuine interest in developing your technical, GIS and wider consultancy skills.

  • Membership of CIEEM, or an interest in working towards professional membership.

  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.

Desirable Experience

You don’t need to have experience in every area listed below — these are skills and experience that would be beneficial and provide opportunities for you to further develop within the role.

It would be great if you also have experience with:

  • Ecological Clerk of Works activities, particularly on infrastructure or construction projects.

  • Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and UKHab habitat classification.

  • Using GIS for ecological constraints mapping, habitat mapping or spatial analysis.

  • Working with larger or more complex environmental datasets.

  • Protected species licences or supporting licence applications.

  • Major infrastructure, energy, construction or development projects.

  • Working alongside clients, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Building relationships and developing a professional network across the ecology, GIS or infrastructure sectors.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is curious, collaborative and keen to develop. If you meet most of the requirements but don’t have experience in every area, we’d still encourage you to apply.
